Tips For Making Chunky Knitted Blankets
Yes, it can be challenging especially if you are new to knitting but just imagine the great reward – a comfortable warm blanket to rest under – that you get at the end of your DIY project!
1. Don’t wear long sleeves shirt
We recommend you to wear sleeveless or short sleeves. Long sleeves will only interfere with the knitting procedure.
2. Take your time
You might not want to rush this piece of a project. Otherwise, you might end up having a poor-quality blanket. Except if you’re already an expert on this knitting task, but for beginners, we expect you to have more patience. In time, you will get faster doing this task.
You can do this with a friend or with a family member so that even if you do it slowly, it will not bore you. This task can even be a bonding opportunity with friends at home.
3. Pull on the blanket with your hands
Make sure the blanket does not bunch up during knitting by tugging on it occasionally. To make sure the final product is as smooth as possible, you will also have to tug and stretch it
4. Pause from time to time
Whenever you feel tired or have a stiffed body, try to do some stretching, eat some snacks or walk around. You can have a coffee break or tea time. Afterwards, you can feel better and awake again. Then, you can continue with your knitted blanket.
Making a Chunky Knitted Blanket
Materials
- Wool Roving
- Duct Tape
Tools
- 2 Broomsticks or 1-1/2″ PVC Pipe
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Your Needles
If you’re using broomsticks, make sure they are clean and smooth to prevent the wool from snagging. Wrap the ends of the broomsticks or PVC pipes with duct tape to create a smoother surface that will be easier on the wool and your hands.
Step 2: Casting On
- a. Hold your broomsticks or PVC pipes as you would regular knitting needles.
- b. Make a slip knot with your wool roving and place it on one of the needles.
- c. Use your hands to loop the wool roving around the second needle, creating stitches. The number of stitches will depend on the desired width of your blanket. A typical throw might start with 12 to 15 stitches.
Step 3: Knitting the Rows
- a. Insert one needle into the first loop on the other needle.
- b. Pull the wool roving through to create a new loop and slide it onto the active needle.
- c. Continue this process from one needle to the other, transferring all loops to the active needle. This forms your knitting rows.
- d. Keep the stitches loose to manage the thickness of the wool and to make the knitting process easier.
Step 4: Building the Blanket
Repeat step 3, back and forth, until you reach the desired length of your blanket. The chunky knit will grow quickly due to the thick wool and large stitches.
Step 5: Casting Off
- a. Once your blanket reaches the desired length, it’s time to cast off to secure the stitches.
- b. Knit two stitches onto your right needle.
- c. Lift the first stitch over the second stitch and off the needle.
- d. Knit another stitch and repeat the process until one stitch remains.
- e. Cut the wool, leaving a tail. Pull this tail through the last loop and tighten to secure.
Step 6: Finishing Touches
Use your hands to gently stretch and adjust the stitches for an even look. Trim any excess wool roving and weave in the ends using your hands or a large crochet hook.

Hand knitting Options for Chunky Knitted Blankets
There’s more than hand knitting.
Hand-knitting is not the only way to make chunky knitted blankets. Here are other methods you can employ. Below are some of the other techniques you can perform in knitting.
1. Giant needle knitting
In this method, giant knitting needles are used to knit chunky knitted blankets. Typically, wood is used to make these needles. Giant needles come in two types. An example is a type with two needles that are long and separated from each other. Smaller items such as scarves, hats, sweaters, and pet rugs are suitable for knitting with these needles. It is possible to find some cute jumbo giant knitting needles at Mia Beach, which can be used for this purpose.
On the other hand, the second type of needle is a lot shorter. These needles are joined using a long wire. These types of needles are typically used for your knitted blankets. The long wire will be holding the blanket together and the stitches to stay in the right position.
2. Arm knitting
In this method, we use our own arms as the holder of the knitted blanket. Instead of using the needles to stitch, you will be using your bare hands to insert and pull the stitches one by one.
3. Crochet
In this method, we will be using large crochet hooks to make the chunky blanket. Have you noticed that knitting is not the only way we can make a chunky, but we can use the crocheting method? Although crocheting consumes more yarn, several claims that this method is faster than knitting with similar results. Two different methods with the same result. It is now up to you, which method you will prefer.
Whatever method you choose, make sure you are comfortable with it and enjoying what you do.

Color Coordination and Style Matching for Chunky Knitted Blankets
When crafting your chunky knitted blankets, choosing the right color is as crucial as selecting the perfect yarn. The colors you pick can transform the ambiance of a room, reflecting your personal style and complementing your home decor. Below, we explore tips on color coordination and style matching to ensure your chunky knitted blankets not only feel cozy but also look stunning.
Understanding Color Theory
To choose the best colors for your chunky knitted blankets, start with basic color theory. Complementary colors, which are opposite each other on the color wheel, can add a vibrant contrast to your space, while analogous colors, which sit next to each other, create a harmonious and soothing effect. For a chunky knitted blanket, consider using a base color and accentuate it with complementary hues for a dynamic look.
Choosing Colors to Match Your Decor
The colors of your chunky knitted blankets should harmonize with your existing home decor. For a minimalist or Scandinavian style, opt for neutral tones like grays, whites, and beiges. If your home features a more bohemian or eclectic style, vibrant colors and rich patterns can make your chunky knitted blankets stand out as statement pieces.
Creating Mood with Colors
Colors have the power to influence mood. Cool tones like blues and greens are calming and are excellent choices for chunky knitted blankets in bedrooms or reading nooks. Warm colors such as reds, oranges, and yellows, on the other hand, evoke warmth and comfort, perfect for a living room or family room blanket.
Using Color Blocking
Color blocking is a stylish way to incorporate multiple colors into your chunky knitted blankets without overwhelming the design. This technique involves using large blocks of different colors in the blanket’s layout. It’s an excellent method for adding visual interest and modern flair to your knitting projects.
Seasonal Color Trends
Stay updated with seasonal color trends to keep your chunky knitted blankets fashionable and timely. Spring might call for pastels and floral hues, while fall could inspire rich oranges, deep yellows, and forest greens. Integrating seasonal colors can refresh your space and keep it looking stylish throughout the year.
By mastering these color coordination techniques, your chunky knitted blankets will add comfort and enhance any room’s aesthetic appeal, making them both functional and fashionable home accessories.
