While cleaning out my closet the other day, I found a lot of clothes that I don’t use anymore. I have about three pairs of jeans that are way past their time and some cute shirts that no longer fit. I did not want to just throw them out, definitely. So what did I do? I made a DIY denim fabric basket.
Instead of chucking those old jeans away, you should give this project a try. It’ll give your old pair of jeans a new lease on life.
Use your pre-loved jeans and shirts to make this denim fabric basket. It is a great way to organize your stuff and neatly store craft tools, pens, pencils, makeup, and even succulent pots!
You don’t have to be an expert at sewing in order to make one. No sewing machine? No problem! You can also do this by hand. Believe me; this is very easy to make!

- 2 pieces 8 inches x 9 inches – interfacing
Tools
- sewing machine or thread and needle
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Materials
- Cut the Fabric: Using the dimensions provided above, cut out the pieces of denim for the outer part of the basket and your choice of fabric for the lining.
- Cut the Interfacing: Cut interfacing to match the dimensions of your lining fabric to provide extra stability.
Step 2: Attach the Interfacing
- Iron the Interfacing: Place the interfacing pieces onto the wrong side (non-visible side) of each lining fabric piece. Iron them together following the interfacing instructions to bond them.
Step 3: Sew the Basket
- Sew the Sides: Place the denim pieces right side together and sew along three sides, leaving the top open. Repeat this step for the lined pieces.
- Box the Corners: For both the outer denim and the lining, pinch each corner and align the side seam with the bottom seam. Sew across the corner, about 1.5 inches from the point, to create a boxed bottom.
- Turn and Iron: Turn the denim outer part right side out and iron flat. Keep the lining wrong side out.
Step 4: Assemble the Basket
- Insert the Lining: Place the lining inside the denim outer part. The right sides of both the lining and the denim should be facing each other.
- Sew the Top Edge: Align the top edges and sew around, leaving a gap of about 3 inches for turning the basket right side out.
- Turn Right Side Out: Through the gap, gently pull the fabric to turn the basket right side out. Iron the edges neatly and sew the gap closed either by hand or with a sewing machine.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
- Topstitching: Topstitch around the top edge of the basket for a cleaner finish and additional stability.
Step 6: Add Personal Touches
- Customize: Add personal touches like labels, embroidery, or decorative patches to make your basket unique.

Variations in Design and Style
Variations in denim fabric basket design or style can transform a simple storage solution into a personalized décor item. These variations allow you to customize your basket to suit different tastes and purposes, making each piece unique.
Below are some creative ways to alter the style and design of your denim fabric basket.
Basket Shapes
Experiment with various shapes beyond the traditional rectangular or square forms. A round denim fabric basket can be charming and ideal for holding knick-knacks or serving as a fruit basket. Alternatively, consider making a triangular basket for a modern look that fits into corners of desks or shelves.
Adding Functional Features
Enhance the usability of your denim fabric basket by adding pockets on the outside or inside. These can hold items like scissors, sewing kits, or other craft tools, making the basket a storage solution and a portable craft organizer. You could add handles or straps from repurposed belts or other fabric scraps to make your baskets more portable.
Decorative Elements
Personalize your denim fabric basket by adding decorative elements. This could involve using techniques such as embroidery, fabric painting, or appliqué to include floral designs, geometric patterns, or personalized messages. Adding lace trims or contrasting fabric borders can also enhance the baskets’ aesthetic appeal.
Size and Proportion Adjustments
Alter the proportions to make the denim fabric basket more suitable for specific uses, such as slim, tall versions for holding magazines or wide, shallow designs for a catch-all entryway piece.
Textural Contrast
Combine your denim with other materials to introduce textural contrast in your denim fabric basket. For example, mixing denim with burlap can give a rustic look, while combining it with velvet or satin can create a more luxurious feel. These contrasts make each basket visually interesting and tactilely varied.
Upcycling Variations
For those passionate about sustainability, consider different ways to upcycle materials into your denim fabric basket. For example, you could use parts of old leather jackets for the handles, repurpose mesh bags into side panels for a breathable version, or use old canvas banners for a durable lining. Each material brings its own story and texture, making your denim fabric basket functional and a piece of conversation-starting home decor.
Patchwork Techniques
Incorporate patchwork techniques to create a visually captivating denim fabric basket. Use different shades and denim textures to piece together the exterior of the basket. This adds a colorful and eclectic look and allows you to use smaller scraps of fabric more efficiently.
Incorporation of Hardware
Introduce elements like rivets, snaps, or buttons commonly found in jeans. These can serve both decorative and functional purposes, reinforcing the basket’s structure or adding a touch of industrial chic to its design.
Dyeing and Bleaching Effects
Experiment with dyeing or bleaching parts of the denim for a more artistic denim fabric basket. This can help achieve an ombre effect, tie-dye patterns, or even bleach stencil designs. Such techniques can transform the conventional denim look into something more vibrant and personalized.
Contrasting Stitching
Use threads in contrasting colors to stitch your denim fabric basket. Bright colors like red, yellow, or white can stand out against the blue denim, highlighting the craftsmanship and adding an element of interest to the overall design.
Lining Varieties
Change up the lining of your denim fabric basket with unexpected materials. Consider plush fabrics for luxurious interiors or waterproof linings for practical plant holders. Patterned cotton or vintage fabrics can also add a hidden charm revealed only when peering inside the basket.
Through investigation of various variants, you may design a denim fabric basket that not only fulfills a useful purpose but also showcases your own flair and originality.
Sustainable Crafting
Sustainable crafting is not just a trend; it’s a meaningful way to reduce waste and repurpose materials we already have, making an environmental impact with every project. Crafting denim fabric baskets from old jeans is a perfect example of how you can turn something destined for the landfill into a useful and stylish item.
Here’s how to incorporate sustainability into your denim fabric basket projects:
Source Responsibly
Begin by sourcing materials thoughtfully. Use denim from old jeans, jackets, or skirts that are no longer wearable. Ask family and friends for donations or visit local thrift stores to find materials. This reduces waste and the demand for new raw materials.
Natural Dyes
If you add color to your denim fabric baskets, opt for natural dyes made from plants, vegetables, or spices. These dyes are less harmful to the environment than synthetic dyes and offer a unique range of earthy tones that can add a rustic charm to your baskets.
Minimize Waste
Plan your cuts carefully to minimize waste. Use smaller denim scraps to create decorative elements like flowers, appliques, or patches for your baskets. Any leftover pieces can be saved for future projects or used as stuffing for cushions and toys.
Energy-Efficient Crafting
When using a sewing machine, consider the energy consumption. Opt for energy-efficient models or manual sewing techniques when possible. Not only do these methods save electricity, but they also add a personal handcrafted touch to your baskets.
Educate and Inspire
Share your knowledge and projects with others. Hosting a workshop or creating an online tutorial on making denim fabric baskets can inspire more people to take up sustainable crafting. This helps spread the word about the benefits of upcycling and encourages a community around environmentally friendly practices.
Your denim fabric basket project joins a bigger trend toward more considerate consumption and inventive reuse when you concentrate on sustainable crafts. Every basket tells a tale of creative recycling and environmental responsibility in addition to being functional.
Conclusion
Making a denim fabric basket is a rewarding way to repurpose old jeans into something both beautiful and functional. This project not only taps into your creative skills but also contributes to environmental sustainability through upcycling. Every basket you create is a testament to thoughtful crafting and the endless possibilities of fabric reuse.
